Spring/Summer 2009Girls On Film

Controversial photographer David Hamilton was the starting point for the Derek Lam beauty inspiration this season - as MAC artist Tom Pecheux hoped to capture the beautiful soft-focus effect of the girls in his film Bilitis. "The look is sensual," he said, "and at the same time fresh and modern." Pecheux used stacks of nudes, taupes and browns to create the bronzed, soft-edged effect, including MAC's Yoghurt and Paradisco Eye Shadows on the models' lips.

Call Of The Wild

Several broadly varied influences stretching from Japan to Africa to Russian-born 1960s supermodel Verushka came together for spring/summer 2009's Amanda Wakeley show, giving the Lancôme team the tough job of distilling them all into one beauty look. Lead make-up artist Sharon Dowsett plumped for a safari-ready, super-chic and ultra-honed face - perfect for the summer heat. "Think rich girl," said Dowsett, who began with Lancôme's professional duty primer, La Base Pro, to achieve an especially even finish, "It's about polished skin and that natural perfection all wrapped up in a haze of beige."

Hey Lady

On the flipside of the coin from the heavy rock'n'roll fringes seen at the likes of L'Wren Scott's spring/summer 2009 show is the contrasting ladylike direction hair is taking for the new season. Tousled, messy manes were out and modernisations of the traditional chignon, roll and pleat were seen at Chanel, Marni and Carolina Herrera. The look screams über-expense and high society; Yves Saint Laurent models wore ultra-neat rolls for 1940s glamour - experiment with horizontal and vertical twists to achieve the same.

Deep Purple

It might not be a trend we're all that keen to follow when spring comes around, but Charlotte Tilbury's work on the Zac Posen models at Thursday's NY Fashion Week show certainly had heads turning. Instead of sticking to tradition with golds and bronzes, Tilbury opted for a dazzling purple lip to take spring's biggest beauty trend to a futuristic level - contrasting the shocking metallic lilacs with a dewy, highlighted complexion. Speaking to WWD, Tilbury said, "I'm seeing pastels and metallics as the make-up trends of the season... Shine and shimmer make lips look bigger because they catch the light so effectively."

Lace it up

The gladiator style of last season have morphed into these retro-inspired lace-up styles/ Fittingly girly and playful, rather than fierce, the lace-up detail showed up on styles from stilettos to sandals. Opt for straps so intricately overlapped that the gaps look almost like cut-outs - these have a peekaboo effect we love.

Equestrian elegance

Be the envy of every cowgirl with Aigner’s Double Saddle, a superbly soft slouchy deerskin bag. Bigger than it looks, a discreet clasp opens it to reveal ample, roomy space for all your shopping! We especially love the cool fringe tassels and hobo handle

Classic work bags for fall

We've always recommended Furla's bags to those hunting for affordable leather work bags. Perfect for those who want quality leather but not to splurge on exorbitant sum for a designer label, Furla fills the gap between the labels and mass market brands perfectly. We love their slouchy, soft leather bags for everything from the office to weekends out.

Shiseido
Light Fantastic

Shiseido launches its autumn/winter 2008-9 colour collection on counters this week, and this season, it's all about contrast. Intriguing Elegance is a line of five key products created by Shiseido's Artistic Director Dick Page to create a dramatic combination of highlight and shadow and so form the chiaroscuro effect - a traditional painting technique that gives three-dimensionality through contrast of colour. These eye shadow quads give ultra-silky application and a dynamic final effect. £26, from Shiseido counters nationwide.

Perfectly Imperfect

While autumn/winter 2008-09 make-up for is all about getting in touch with your inner goth, it seems a lighter mood is just around the corner. VOGUE.COM caught up with make-up legend Bobbi Brown backstage at Rachel Roy's New York Fashion Week show to find out how she creates the catwalk look for the models and what will be big in beauty next spring...

Bobbi said, "I love working with Rachel Roy - she's incredibly talented and such a lovely person. I was inspired by her spring collection to create a look that was 'perfectly imperfect.' I kept the face clean with a hint of shimmer blush, and used the new Bobbi Brights Palette (launching in spring 2009) to create a smoky purple eye, loosely applied for a fun, layered look. That's one of my favorite parts of Fashion Week - trying out new techniques that are a bit more daring and bold." We say start practicing now with Bobbi Brown's famous Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Violet Ink (£13.50).

'Perfectly imperfect' - now that's the trend for us...

Rock 'N' RollWhile the rock influence might be nothing new for hair - think Autumn/Winter 2008-9's glam rock phase - this season's look is taking the concept right back to its rock 'n' roll roots. Chloe and Anna Sui both sent out models with roughed up, dishevelled manes, harking back to the genre's 1960s heyday, while L'Wren Scott's models were given long, sweeping and thick-cut fringes for a true Marianne Faithfull edge. Reject the rules of grooming for spring because fashion seems to be embracing the frizzy, the messy and the untamed all over again.

Spring/Summer 2009Rainbow Brights"This is not a time for downbeat make-up," said Max Factor's Global Creative Director - and pioneering make-up artist - Pat McGrath, and boy, does the fashion world seem to agree. And while colour-blocking and potent tribal prints appeared to be the catwalk's answer to the current downturn in the global mood, make-up followed suit with bold shades, futuristic rainbow flashes and graphic patterns adorning models' faces. Hussein Chalayan's space-age cobalt sunglasses matched models' fuchsia lips, while the Gucci girls worked a tropical, electric blue, strategically positioned around the eye for maximum drama. The future's looking bright.

Beauty Trend:
Autumn/Winter 2009-10New York, New YorkNYC's autumn/winter 2009-10 collections took faces through an exciting journey of colour and era. Beginning with taupes, beiges and sepia-toned shading of the Thirties and Forties at Diane Von Furstenberg and Donna Karan, with a punky pit-stop in the Fifties where DKNY flaunted black graphics paired with bubblegum pinks, and culminating in an explosive Eighties stop-over courtesy of Marc Jacobs where a Siouxsie Sioux-inspired palette rocked the runways.

A return to refined glamour was present at shows like Oscar De la Renta and Luca Luca, where chief make-up artist James Kaliardos described the feel as "romantic, glamorous, feminine - sculpted and shaped, timeless and classic." Tuleh, Matthew Williamson and J. Mendel embraced a more dramatic twist, though, with overtly smoky eyes and a high-octane lip palette of blood red and deepest mauve, with Polly Osmond for MAC describing the look as "Thirties Parisian".
